Cayo Santa María: a paradise with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters

The coastline here has 13 km of beaches with fine white sand, including Perla Blanca, Las Caletas, Cañón and Cuatro Punta, with rocky headlands that make them all the more beautiful. The beaches of Cayo Santa María offer tourist information services for all their visitors. It is also a unique destination for nature lovers: its natural surroundings are home to a diverse range of perfectly conserved flora and fauna.

The San Pascual (“El Pontón”)

The San Pascual was run aground near Cayo Francés seventy years ago. As a reinforced concrete ship built in San Francisco, California, in 1920, it has become something of a rarity in the naval world. Also known by the islanders as “El Pontón”, many consider the ship to be yet another small island.

Cayo Largo

The barrier reef that protects Cayo Largo and other smaller islands is more than 50 km long, and is the area’s main draw. One of the area’s great attractions is that you don’t need to be an expert swimmer to dive amongst its coral and tropical fish.

Cayo Santa María Aquarium-Dolphinarium

Opened in 2011, this aquarium offers daily dolphins shows (it is home to a total of nine dolphins) as well as sea lion displays. It is also home to many of the region’s autochthonous species, such as the hawksbill sea turtle, which is critically endangered. The dolphinarium is the only attraction of its type in Villa Clara.

Pueblo La Estrella

A large shopping and entertainment complex where you can get your hands on some of Cuba’s famous cigars, rum and local handicrafts.

Marina Gaviota

Located on the island of Cayo Las Brujas, this marina close to the cays offers a full range of facilities including boat trips, scuba diving, catamaran trips, rowing, kayaking, etc.

Santa Clara Remedios

Why not take the early 20th-century steam train to the colonial-era town of San Juan de los Remedios, founded by the island’s colonisers. Or take a stroll around the central park and visit the “Iglesia Parroquial Mayor” (Main Parish Church) with its gold-coated Baroque alter.
