Lisbon, the city of light

Lisbon is the Portuguese capital. Located on the mouth of the Tagus River, it is the country’s largest and wealthiest city and its political, economic and cultural centre. It has a population of over 545,000 people and is divided into four districts: Alfama, Baixa, Bairro Alto and Belém. The city was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 but has been rebuilt over the years.

Lisbon is one of Europe’s warmest cities. Its mild, rainy climate is tempered by Atlantic breezes. Summer temperatures can reach up to 30ºC and rarely fall below 5ºC in winter.
