Barcelona, an open, cosmopolitan and modern city

Barcelona is a Spanish city, and the capital of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. Its population of 1,619,337 inhabitants in 2010 makes it the second most populated city in Spain after Madrid, and the eleventh in the European Union. The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, which belongs to the urban Region of Barcelona, has 5,012,961 inhabitants (2010), making it the sixth most populated in the European Union.


Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, dry summers and sporadic rainfall the rest of the year. Snow is practically non-existent. Temperatures are warm in summer and mild in winter, with few daily heat oscillations.
